Hurricane Erin's path will not bring its strongest winds ashore. However, it continues to grow in size, and its impacts from high surf, rip currents and coastal flooding are already increasing along parts of the East Coast.

Even before storm surge warnings were issued in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, ocean overwash started inundating shoresides homes and hotels. Transportation crews hustled to shore up dunes in the hopes of at least delaying the wash out of the critical road in and out of the area – Highway 12. Tropical storm conditions will likely begin along the Outer Banks of North Carolina late Wednesday, continuing into Thursday. Breaking waves could get as high as 20-plus feet, and serious beach and coastal damage is likely. There is potential for portions of NC-12 to be impassable for several days. The Weather Channel’s Justin Michaels describes the scene from Virginia Beach, where waves from Hurricane Erin are expected to reach 10 feet or higher. Lifeguards will also be leaving their stands.

As Hurricane Erin stays well offshore, parts of southern New England and the Northeast will still feel impacts. Winds could gust as high as 30-50 mph at times along southern parts of New England and the Northeast coast. High surf and coastal flooding will also be a concern as Erin’s steady onshore winds will push water toward the coast. Watch to see when and where the greatest impacts will be.
