    Weather Summary

    Shaun Tanner
Weather Underground Forecast for Sunday, May 11, 2008. A major developing storm began to make itself known in the middle of the country Sunday as it roared out of the Rockies and into the Plains. The storm was not only a major player in the nation's weather on Saturday, but it will remain a major player through the rest of the weekend.

As the low stormed out of the Rockies, it picked up a tremendous amount of moisture that instigated widespread showers and thunderstorms from northern Arkansas through Minnesota. Some of these thunderstorms produced damaging hail and wind in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri. The possibility of severe weather remained into the late afternoon and evening through the Lower Mississippi Valley. Residents in this region should continue to monitor local weather conditions and be prepared for severe weather.

Meanwhile, a low pressure system moved off the East Coast and into the Atlantic Ocean. This movement allowed precipitation to diminish by late morning.

Also, a Pacific front moved close to the Northwest. This feature will eventually bring some precipitation to the Northwest later in the evening.

The Northeast rose into the 60s, while the Southeast saw temperatures into the 80s. The Southern Plains rose into the 80s and 90s, while the Northern Plains saw temperatures in the 40s and 50s. The Northwest rose into the 50s and 60s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Saturday ranged from a low of 12 degrees at Copper Mountain, Colo. to a high of 100 degrees at Laredo, Texas.

Cyclone Nargis death toll may top 100,000

    Dr. Jeff Masters

The tragedy of Cyclone Nargis' aftermath in Myanmar continues to intensify, with the top U.S. diplomat in the county now predicting a death toll of 100,000. A death toll of 80,000 has been estimated by a local official in just one district of the country--Labutta--so the death toll may go much higher than 100,000. Although the first major U.N. relief flight of emergency supplies has finally landed, the criminal indifference of the nation's leaders towards the plight ...
