Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, May 24, 2013.

Showers and thunderstorms will move into the Plains, while also continuing across the East Coast on Friday. A low pressure system over the Rocky Mountains will persist on its eastward track and move into the Plains. Flow around this system will create northward flow, pulling abundant moisture and energy in from the Gulf of Mexico. This will allow for scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop across the Southern Plains again on Friday, spreading northward through the Central and Northern Plains. There is a slight chance that these storms will turn severe across northeastern Colorado, into western Kansas and Nebraska. Large hail and strong winds are likely in these areas, with possibly a tornado or two.

Meanwhile in the East, a trough of low pressure and associated cold front will slowly move eastward and offshore the East Coast on Friday. This system will allow for showers and thunderstorms to persist from the Mid-Atlantic states through Maine. Severe thunderstorms are not likely in these areas, but periods of heavy rainfall and strong winds will persist as this system lingers over the Northeast through Friday night.

Out West, an area of low pressure continues spinning over the Pacific Northwest, maintaining onshore flow. This will bring more rain showers to Oregon and Washington, with snow showers possible at highest elevations.

... Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon MDT
Friday for elevations above 5500 feet...

A Winter Weather Advisory for elevations above 5500 feet for
snow remains in effect until noon MDT Friday.

* Timing and main impact: snow levels near 6000 feet will lower to
near 5000 feet late tonight and continue into Friday morning.
Temperatures at or slightly above freezing will limit
accumulations on roadways over mountain passes. Snow will
continue the rest of tonight then taper off Friday morning.

* Snow accumulations: snow accumulations of up to 2 inches are
expected over Marias Pass... elevations above 6000 feet will see
an additional 2 to 4 inches.

* Visibility: visibilities could be reduced to less than one half
mile at times in snow.

* Elevations: for elevations above 5500 feet.

* Other impacts: travelers over Marias Pass should expect
reduced visibilities and possibly some slush on the roadway
tonight through Friday morning. Those venturing to
elevations above 5000 feet in Glacier National Park and in
the bob Marshall wilderness areas should be prepared for
winter conditions.

* Locations affected include: Marias Pass.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow
will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow
covered roads and limited visibilities... and use caution while
driving.
