Weather affects our small busines

We are small famers so the weather can make or break us. I don't think there is any other occupation that is so dependent on weather. We can lose crops to dry and wet weather. We've had droughts, drenching rains, cool temperatures and temps that reach into the triple digits. Can anyone name another occupation or industry that is more dependent on weather?

Well, maybe during the age of sail mariners were, but today...no.

My brother is a farmer near St Augustine, FL. Even in their greenhouses and irrigated crops, the weather can cause major issues. One example, this year's drought. They had issues with salt water incursion into their wells due to the drop in aquifer levels. They had to take measures to get rid of the salt before it killed too many plants/trees.

BTW...Nice meeting you, and Happy Mother's Day!

I actually tried to comment the other night but just as I was about to send it, it just disappeared into thin air! So I'll give it another go and see what happens.

As I was trying to say, my other half and I fish for a living. Believe me when I tell you that we can go for weeks with no income, usually caused by waves that are too high. We fish on anchor so waves that are over 5 feet are out of our league.

Of course, our biggest fears are during hurricane season. That has the possibility of ruining us completely and in a heartbeat. We do take all the precautions possible, i.e. tying the larger boat up into the mangroves for shelter, and pulling the smaller one out and tying it to a building. There's a lot of fingercrossing and praying that happens during those trying times.

I actually grew up in a rural farming community so I totally understand where you are coming from in your comments. I've always admired the farming families. You have a lot more to give than I do.

*shakes your hand* Pleasure to meet you.
