The Backyard Birdwatcher and Homemade Suet Cakes
Posted by: TheRasberryPatch, 23. marraskuuta 2008 klo 20:07 (GMT) +0
I was in another blog when we got talking about suet cakes. In the past I have made my own suet cakes, but would get discouraged when the cakes would be gone in a day or two. With the ones you buy at the store they could last a couple of weeks or longer. Don't get me wrong I enjoy feeding the birds, but it was just seeing my work disappear so fast. Anyway, someone asked if I had a recipe. I figured why not start a blog and see what others come up with, especially now that it appears that winter is starting to come in around some of the US, especially here in Pennsylvania.
I found a book that I have called '1,029 Backyard Birding Secrets' and another called 'Concise Birdfeeder Handbook' with recipes.

I will start with a basic recipe and on occasion if more is wanted I will put in more recipes. The first book mentioned is a lot of readers recipes and secrets on what they have done in the past. one key advice - find a few molds. i saved bought suet cake molds and wash them and use them for my homemade suet cakes. once cooled in the refrigerator they are the same size as your suet cage feeder.

Basic Peanut Butter Suet Recipe

one part fat
one part peanut butter
six parts cornmeal

you can mix in seeds, nuts, raisins, crumbled stale cheese, crumbled cake or bread, oat groats or whatever is handy.

melt the fat and stir in the ingredients into a thick pudding. pour the mixture into your molds or can or other container.

good luck and hope to see some responses.

wow dragon. that sounds like a great project.
the clay from the creekbeds is interesting. so all you did was dig up clay and put it in buckets and brought it home to dry? how much clay did you bring home?

Thanks for stopping by and have a great day.

Hi Ras,

Thanks for stopping by.. and yes, we have alot more House Projects that really need done but now we will wait a while and see what the economy is going to do...not in a rush at this time to tear into our very outdated and work out kitchen!

I do need to make up some home made suet using the receipts above..I can do up a bunch of cakes and put them in the freezer. I have these inexpensive Glad Plastic containes that are the same size as my suet container.. I just need to take the time to make them up.

Hope your week is going well!!!

Happy Tuesday!
