Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see the Sea of Cortez has had another 24 hours of cloudless skies.
Looking now along the west coast of Mexico I can see that at some time since yesterday afternoon there has been a thunderbumper working from around Mazatlan south to the Gulf of Tehuantepec. During the early morning hours it looks like there was a sold line of thumpers along the coast. This morning it looks like the only remaining thunderbumper is right over Zihuatanejo.
The isthmus and the Gulf of Tehuantepec are pretty much free of any clouds this morning.
Looking out into the Eastern Pacific basin I can see that the monsoon trough is fairly active this morning. There is a lonely low embedded in the zone around 102W. It’s been there for about a week now waiting for a big strong Tropical Wave to come along and get something going. It does not look like that is going to happen. First it’s too far out in colder waters and there are no Tropical Waves in the vicinity.
There is nothing cooking in our Tropical Kitchen this morning. There are however a couple of Tropical Waves traversing the Atlantic today. The closest could arrive later in the week.
There is Tropical Depression Two just exiting the Yucatan heading north along the east coast of Mexico heading toward Playa del Carman and Cancun this morning. This system is dumping a lot of water as it progresses north. It is forecast to turn inland tomorrow.
Well that’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where that low that has been parked off the Washington coast for the past 4 days has finally started to slowly moving toward the coast. It has been bringing mostly light and scattered showers to the Great Northwest for two days now and today it is bringing a lot of moisture with it. There will be periods of heavy rain, and due to the slowness of this system there is concern for flooding.
As this system moves east the intermountain west should see heavy rain, thunderbumpers, possible hail, and gusterly winds and perhaps some flooding in the cascades.
The revised forecast for northern California has rain staying to the
north of the California border. The north start will however be overcast
through the end of the week until this system moves out of the area.
In southern California fair weather will prevail for the next week. Fair
Weather meaning fog along the coast and inland until late mornings.
Seasonally warm temperatures however there is a 1026 high off the
southern California coast and a 1000 mb low over Lake Mead that is giving
cause to gusterly conditions in the deserts and mountains.
Looking now over to the southwest where it will remain hot and dry
most of the week. With the monsoon season already a week old they are
not getting a lot of moisture from the south. That could change this
weekend as conditions look favorable for some of that moisture buildup
along the Sierra Madre range to start moving north into the southwest. In
the meantime it will be hot and dry.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the
Fence our winds swing to the south for at least the 3-day forecast period.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: very moderate SE winds over the 3-day forecast
period.
The central Sea: mid teens along the Baja coast a bit lower on the Sonoran side.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands mostly light southerlies over the next 3 days.
The East Cape: moderate, mid teens today then light Thursday and Friday.
The Sonoran passage: mid teens from the SW for the 3-day forecast period.
The Mexican Riviera: mostly light to moderate SW winds for the next 3 days.
