.Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that we have had another 24 hours of clear skies over the Sea of Cortez.
Looking south to the Mexican Riviera where off shore for the past several days there has been a large area of very heavy thunderbumper activity that has been sending scattered plumes of clouds toward the coast. That is continuing this morning mostly from around Zihuatanejo south.
The Tehuantepec has 100% cloud cover this morning and has had several thunderbumpers pass over the Gulf during the night. There is a weak trough moving through the bay of Campache on the eastern end of the Tehuantepec isthmus and is expected to force a wind event across the isthmus into the Gulf of Tehuantepec by Sunday morning. They an expect winds of 20-25 knots and building seas to around 10 feet likely through Tuesday.
Looking now out along the ITCZ/Monsoon trough at 106W and 9N there are a couple of embedded lows that the models are showing have some potential for tropical development as it drifts NW during the next 24 hours. It has been IDed as invest 90.
When a low has been designated as an invest at this time the Met schools around the world as well as the National Hurricane Center and various other weather services like Weather Underground begin collecting data from the region and publish this information on the internet. The invest showed up on the Tropical Page of the Sonrisa Net web page early this morning. Of course I’ll be watching for future development of this system.
OK, that looks like it for our hood so looking now north to the west coast of America where high pressure looms large. Summer temperatures are showing up in the west with many locations being forecast to see 100 degrees over the next couple of days.
In northern California: Sacramento high 90s, Redding low 100s. In the Great Northwest Portland will see the mid to high 80s and the
Seattle area mid 70s over the weekend.
Southern California will see coastal fog and temperatures in the mid 70s into the weekend. Inland valleys should see the high 90s.
Looking now over to the southwest where widespread 100 degree readings are expected across the lower deserts this weekend. Above average temperatures will continue well into next week as high pressure remains the predominant weather feature across the desert southwest
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence the entire Sea should be much like it has been for the past week.
Tomorrow the honeymoon will be over with the return of brisk to strong winds for the northern and central Sea. Ballpark 20 knots and a bit higher along the Sonoran coast from Puerto Panesco to Guaymas/San Carlos. Not all the models agree with this forecast but I always go with the higher values
My confidence level is higher for the southern Sea from around Puerto Escondido south to the cape where they should continue to see moderate NE or NW winds for the 3-day forecast period.
Temperature-wise the Baja insider is forecasting 107 for the middle of next week for La Paz. Marina de La Paz reported the high yesterday of 85 and the airport reported 95. I’m inclined to go with the airport readings.
The rest of the locations around the Sea saw afternoon temperatures up a few degrees from the day before and most were in the high 80s to low 90s. They should be about the same or a bit higher today.
73s Y’all
